PREPARING FOR MEDICARE’S OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period (AKA Annual Enrollment Period - AEP) is just around the corner! Open enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, 2025 and it’s your chance to review and adjust your Medicare coverage for 2026. With recent changes, it’s crucial to ensure your plan covers your medications and doctors. Check your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), which will be sent from your insurance carrier by September 30, for updates on premiums, benefits, and provider networks.

Missing Open Enrollment could lock you into a less suitable plan until 2027 so it’s important to start preparing now! With so many options and plan changes, navigating Medicare Open Enrollment can feel overwhelming, but Care Compass is here to help! Check out our blog, 8 Tips to Help you Navigate Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period so you can approach open enrollment with clarity and confidence.

FALL MEDICARE CHECKLIST: WHAT SENIORS SHOULDN’T MISS

In addition to Open Enrollment, seniors should keep these year-end Medicare priorities in mind:

🗒️ Review Supplemental Benefits: By July 31, 2025, Medicare Advantage plans were required to send mid-year notices about unused benefits (e.g., dental, vision, fitness, OTC benefits, etc). Use these before year-end to maximize value. They will not roll over into next year!

💉 Flu Season Prep: With the arrival of Fall comes the annual flu season. We want to remind all our Medicare beneficiaries that you are eligible for a FREE flu shot. Protecting yourself and those around you from the flu is simple and crucial, especially as we head into cooler months. Getting your flu shot is a key step in staying healthy.

💰 Budget for 2026 Premiums: With Medicare Part B premiums rising to $206.50 in 2026, review your budget. Consider cost-saving plans during AEP to ease financial strain.

NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION AWARENESS MONTH

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, your friendly reminder that Medicare covers important shots like the flu vaccine, shingles vaccine, COVID-19 boosters, and more at no cost to you! Staying current helps protect you from serious illness, especially as we head into fall and winter!

🎊 CHEERS TO 60 YEARS OF MEDICARE! 🎂

On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare into law, creating a program that now supports over 65 million Americans. At the bill signing, President Harry S. Truman received the very first Medicare card, honoring his early efforts to expand health care access (𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒕 𝒈𝒐𝒕 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆?😉). Sixty years later, Medicare still remains a cornerstone of the American healthcare system.

🏥 MEDICARE MINUTE: KEY UPDATES

Medicare Now Covers At-Home Nursing for Dementia Patients 🏡

For the first time, Medicare is covering up to 70 hours of at-home nursing care for dementia patients through the Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) Model. Launched July 1, 2024, this voluntary, eight-year model test is designed to ease the burden on caregivers and improve quality of life for people living with dementia. The GUIDE Model provides coordinated dementia care, caregiver education and support, respite services, and trained at-home nursing. Its goal is to help patients remain in their homes and communities while reducing strain on unpaid caregivers. Senate Bill Pushes for Hospital Price Transparency

Getting clear pricing information from hospitals has long been a challenge in healthcare. Executive orders from both the Biden and Trump administrations have tried, but so far failed, to get providers to share how much different types of care costs. That’s because hospitals have repeatedly dodged these orders, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. And while some fines have been doled out, the cost of care is still unclear. A new bipartisan Senate bill, introduced by Senators Roger Marshall and John Hickenlooper, aims to enforce hospital price transparency by requiring providers to publicly share negotiated insurance rates and cash prices. This addresses the challenge of unclear healthcare costs, which can vary widely even within the same hospital. The bill also mandates itemized bills for patients and could save up to $1 trillion by reducing administrative waste and fraud.

Trump Admin Launches Pilot Program for Weight-Loss Drug Coverage

The Trump administration is set to launch a five-year pilot program starting in April 2026 for Medicaid and January 2027 for Medicare, allowing voluntary coverage of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound for obesity management. These GLP-1 receptor agonists, originally for Type 2 diabetes, can help patients lose up to 20% of their body weight, addressing obesity as a serious health condition. However, the high cost ($5,000 to $7,000 annually) raises concerns about affordability, with estimates suggesting a $35 billion impact on Medicare by 2034.

Expanding Access to Outpatient Procedures

Medicare wants to allow about 1,730 procedures currently only reimbursed in inpatient settings to also be reimbursed in outpatient settings. A July 17 proposed rule suggests getting rid of the inpatient-only (IPO) list, established in 2000, which dictates a list of procedures Medicare will only reimburse if performed in inpatient settings. The list would be phased out over three years starting in 2026 with 285 mostly musculoskeletal procedures. These services have already started to shift from inpatient to outpatient setting, thanks to advancements in technology and medicine, the rule notes. CMS says in the rule it has received public comments over the years that physicians should be trusted to decide where to perform each procedure for their patients, but others, like the American Hospital Association (AHA), have defended its importance.

🔔 REMINDERS

DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOUR SUPPLEMENTAL BENEFITS!

Starting in 2025, CMS is requiring Medicare Advantage (MA) plans to send personalized “Mid-Year Enrollee Notifications” between June 30 and July 31. These notices will highlight any unused supplemental benefits - such as dental, vision, hearing, and fitness services - from the first half of the year. Since many enrollees overlook these valuable extras, the goal is to remind you to take full advantage of what your plan provides. If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, keep an eye out for this mid-year update and don’t let your benefits go to waste
