MEN’S HEALTH MONTH: HOW SENIOR MEN CAN USE MEDICARE TO STAY AHEAD OF MAJOR HEALTH RISKS

Medicare offers powerful tools to help senior men stay ahead of serious health conditions through early detection and preventive care. June is Men’s Health Month and it’s a powerful reminder to make sure you're taking full advantage of all the benefits Medicare has available to support long-term wellness and peace of mind!

MID-YEAR BENEFITS NOTIFICATIONS

Starting in 2025, CMS is requiring Medicare Advantage (MA) plans to send personalized “Mid-Year Enrollee Notifications” between June 30 and July 31. These notices will highlight any unused supplemental benefits - such as dental, vision, hearing, and fitness services - from the first half of the year. Since many enrollees overlook these valuable extras, the goal is to remind you to take full advantage of what your plan provides. If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, keep an eye out for this mid-year update and don’t let your benefits go to waste!

🏥 MEDICARE MINUTE: KEY UPDATES

Hospice Medicare Scam on the Rise

Medicare enrollees are being tricked into signing up for hospice without their knowledge and the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz has issued a public announcement warning against the most common tactics being employed by fraudulent hospice operators, including going door-to-door, communicating via text, calls and emails, and even approaching seniors at bingo halls, community centers and other locations. “There’s a Medicare scam out there that can really hurt people… If you sign that paper, you could be putting your future health care rights at risk.” You can find Dr. Oz’s full statement on the Medicare Facebook page.

Proposal of Medicare “Part E”

Democratic lawmakers have reintroduced the Choose Medicare Act to establish Medicare Part E, which would allow individuals and employers to voluntarily enroll in a new, expanded version of Medicare and opt in via state or federal marketplaces. The proposed Part E would compete with private insurance, sustain itself through premiums and apply existing Affordable Care Act subsidies. Any existing subsidies available for Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans would be applicable to Part E coverage.

Medicare Advantage Star Ratings Evolving for 2026

CMS has finalized updates to the 2026 Medicare Advantage Star Ratings reducing emphasis on patient experience and complaints while increasing focus on clinical outcomes. According to the official 2026 Star Ratings Measures and Weights” document from CMS, the weight for Patient Experience/Complaints & Access will be reduced, while new outcome measures like “Improving or Maintaining Physical Health” and “Improving or Maintaining Mental Health” are being added. Star Ratings influence plan quality bonus payments, consumer plan choices, and can affect premiums, benefits, and enrollment availability.

💪 WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT: HYDRATION AS WE AGE

DID YOU KNOW? As we age, the sense of thirst naturally decreases and it is harder for the body to hold onto water? In fact, up to 40% of adults older than 65 experience chronic dehydration, which can lead to fatigue, confusion and serious health problems such as life-threatening infections. With summer in full swing, it’s essential that we consciously maintain fluid intake, even when we don't feel thirsty. Here are some creative and delicious ways to keep your hydration levels up:

1. Fruit-Infused Water
Enhance your water with slices of fruits like lemon, cucumber, or berries, or add herbs such as mint or basil. This not only adds flavor but also makes drinking water more enjoyable.

2. Herbal and Fruit Teas
Iced herbal teas like chamomile, hibiscus, or peppermint are caffeine-free and packed with antioxidants. Brew a pot and chill it in the fridge for a refreshing treat.

3. Hydrating Fruits and Vegetables
Snack on water-rich produce like watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and oranges. These not only hydrate but also provide essential vitamins and minerals.

4. Coconut Water Boost
Coconut water is a natural electrolyte drink, great for replenishing minerals lost through sweat. Choose varieties without added sugars.

5. Popsicles and Smoothies
Homemade fruit popsicles or smoothies made from hydrating fruits and veggies can be both nutritious and cooling treats.
