🏥 MEDICARE MINUTE

STEP BY STEP GUIDE: EVALUATING YOUR PRESCRIPTION DRUG PLAN (PDP) COVERAGE

If you have a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plan, your coverage is not affected by the Annual Enrollment Period, so no action is needed to keep your policy active in 2026. However, your prescription drug plan (Part D) can change from year to year, so it’s a good idea to review it to make sure it still meets your needs. Check out this helpful video from Tara showing step-by-step how to review your medications and compare plans on the official Medicare.gov website. It’s quick, easy, and ensures you will be in the best Rx plan for 2026.

💊 MEDICARE-NEGOTIATED LOWER PRICES START

Ten prescription drugs with high costs for Medicare will be available at lower prices in 2026. Thanks to a prescription drug law passed in 2022, the first round of Medicare-negotiated prices is here to make meds more accessible and affordable. Starting January 1st, these lower prices will apply to 10 pricey drugs for arthritis, blood clots, cancer, and diabetes, which is great news for millions of beneficiaries.

These negotiated prices aren't optional; they have to be available to eligible Medicare beneficiaries and included in all Medicare Advantage prescription drug plans and stand-alone Part D drug plans. This whole initiative is expected to save recipients around $1.5 billion in out-of-pocket spending in 2026, and keep saving them money every year after that. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Medicare itself would have saved about $6 billion if these lower prices had been in effect back in 2023.

MEDICARE CALLING BACK THOUSANDS OF EMPLOYEES FOR OPEN ENROLLMENT

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is temporarily calling back all furloughed staff. According to the Department of Health and Human Services shutdown plan, 47 percent of CMS staff have been on furlough since government funding ran out Oct. 1.

REMINDER! 2026 INCREASES EXPECTED

As you review your coverage, keep in mind that several key costs under the Medicare program are projected to rise in 2026. It’s a good idea to build these changes into your budget and plan now so you’re not caught off guard when the new year begins.

  • The standard Medicare Part B monthly premium is expected to increase from $185 to $206.50.

  • The Part B annual deductible is projected to climb from $257 to $288.

  • For prescription drug coverage under Medicare Part D, the maximum out-of-pocket cost (the drug cap) is expected to increase from $2,000 to $2,100.

TIMELY TOPIC: BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

October is breast cancer awareness month and it’s a great reminder to schedule your annual screening! Early detection saves lives - regular check-ups help catch health issues sooner, saving you stress and money. Medicare Part B covers mammograms for women age 40 and older every 12 months at no cost when your provider accepts assignment.  If a follow-up diagnostic mammogram is needed, Part B covers 80% after your deductible. Stay proactive and protect your health! 🎀

💪 WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT: STAYING BRIGHT THROUGH THE DARKER DAYS

As the days get shorter and sunlight becomes scarcer, it’s common to feel a bit “off” - more tired, less motivated, or even a little down. Seasonal changes can affect mood, especially for older adults, but there are simple strategies to help maintain emotional wellness.

🍂 Get Outside When You Can: Even brief walks in the daylight can boost mood, improve sleep, and provide gentle exercise. Natural light helps regulate your body’s internal clock.

☕ Stay Socially Connected: Call a friend, meet a neighbor for coffee, or enjoy a family chat. Social interaction is one of the most powerful ways to lift spirits.

💡 Light Your Mood: Consider bright indoor lighting in the morning or a light therapy lamp if recommended by your doctor. Light exposure can positively influence mood and energy.

😴 Keep a Routine: Regular sleep, meals, and activity help stabilize mood and energy levels throughout the day.

🧘 Mindfulness & Gratitude: Journaling, meditation, or simple breathing exercises can reduce stress and bring focus to positive moments.

A few small changes can make a big difference. This fall, focus on self-care, connection, and daily light so your mind stays as vibrant as the season’s colors.

👪 BRIDGING GENERATIONS: MAKING FALL MEMORIES TOGETHER

Autumn is the perfect season to slow down and savor simple moments with family. Whether near or far, there are so many ways grandparents and their families can stay connected and make memories that last!

🍎 Visit a pumpkin patch or apple orchard: Let little ones pick their favorites. Snap a photo together each year to watch how everyone changes over time! We are fortunate to have so many local options right here in Blair County and the surrounding area.

🧑‍🍳 Cook or bake something seasonal: Make apple crisp, chili, or pumpkin muffins. Share the stories behind old family recipes and write them down to start a “family favorites” cookbook.

🎨 Get crafty: Try leaf rubbings, pinecone bird feeders, or painted pumpkins. These hands-on projects spark creativity and make cute fall decorations!

🚶‍♀️ Take a nature walk : Collect colorful leaves for pressing or turn it into a scavenger hunt. It’s an easy, healthy way to enjoy the beauty of the season together.

However you celebrate fall, the best part is the laughter, stories, and love shared across generations, one cozy moment at a time.

🔔 REMINDER: DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOUR SUPPLEMENTAL BENEFITS!

As we move into the final months of 2025, it’s a great time to check in on your Medicare Advantage plan’s supplemental benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness services. These extras are designed to support your overall health and well-being, but many enrollees forget to take full advantage of them before the year ends. Be sure to review your plan’s benefits and schedule any appointments or services you may need so you don’t miss out! These benefits DO NOT roll over into next year, so be sure to use them now!
