🏥 MEDICARE MINUTE

1. Warning: Meta Allows Repeat Scammers to Target Seniors on Facebook & Instagram

A new report from the Center for Countering Digital Hate reveals that Meta — parent company of Facebook and Instagram — is failing to stop repeat con artists from buying ads that specifically target seniors. Over the past year, ads from just 30 active scam accounts generated an estimated 215 million impressions, with 73% of those impressions reaching users over age 65. Many of these ads use fake celebrity endorsements or promise thousands of dollars in "free Medicare cash cards" or "free groceries."

If you see an ad on social media offering Medicare cash cards, gift cards, or asking for your personal information — do not click it. When in doubt, call us directly to verify whether a benefit is legitimate.

2. 2027 Medicare Advantage Rule: Some Protections Added, Others Rolled Back

CMS recently finalized the 2027 Medicare Advantage rule, and it is a mixed bag for beneficiaries. On the positive side, plans must now publicly post eligibility criteria for supplemental benefits — making it easier to know what you qualify for before enrolling. Debit cards used to administer benefits will also have stronger guardrails to prevent fraud.

However, several consumer protections were rolled back: plans no longer have to remind enrollees of unused supplemental benefits mid-year, and brokers are no longer required to mention free SHIP counseling resources during sales calls. As always, if you have questions about your Medicare Advantage plan's benefits or want an independent review of your coverage, we are here to help — at no cost to you.

🤓 QUICK READS & FUN FINDS

🐾 Aww: Spring is here — and so are the unexpected houseguests. AP News reports that wild animals are nesting closer to humans than ever this season — mallards in flower beds, foxes under decks, and birds in the most creative spots imaginable. Experts say: enjoy the neighbors, just don't disturb the nest.

📝 That's cool: In a world of DMs and group chats, pen pals are making a quiet comeback. An AP reporter recently visited her pen pal of 40 years in New Zealand — a friendship that started with a handwritten letter and outlasted every social media platform ever invented.

🤔 DID YOU KNOW?

Seniors Actually Need More Protein, Not Less

Science has debunked the myth that we need less food as we age. Because of a natural condition called "anabolic resistance," older bodies become highly inefficient at extracting nutrients from food. To maintain independence, preserve muscle mass, and prevent dangerous falls, older adults actually need much larger portions of high-quality protein to keep their muscles strong. Think lean meats, eggs, legumes, Greek yogurt, and cottage cheese — and talk to your doctor about whether your current diet is supporting your strength and mobility goals.

"The family is one of nature's masterpieces." — George Santayana

As we settle into our new routine as a family of five, we are reminded daily of how precious — and wonderfully chaotic — this masterpiece can be. We are incredibly grateful for the community that surrounds us, both personally and professionally.

As always, our goal is to keep you informed, empowered, and thriving. If you have any questions or topics you would like us to cover in a future issue, we would love to hear from you. Until next time — stay well and stay curious!
